Maverick Construction Inc. builder contractor to Grand Hotel Mackinac Island, Northern Michigan. Millennium Wing phase 2
This project faced its own challenges. As the design evolved it was evident this project would be a huge undertaking. The aggressive schedule was such that every aspect had to be planned like clockwork. On November 1st at 1:15 pm the first column was lifted off the truck. This phase was derived from the way the Empire State Bldg. was constructed. Instead of unloading the steel in Saint Ignace and then shipping by motor barge, we rented 7 flat bed trailers loaded the steel at the fabricator in order of erection. The steel was then left on the trailers and ferried to the Island. After each erection sequence the trailer was ferried back to the mainland and sent to the fabricator (stacked 2 on 1) for another load. By operating this way we eliminated the multitude of times the material had to be handled, thus saving time and money.
The exterior walls were to be built in place. This also would be time consuming and would delay the temporary heat and concrete work thus setting the project back. Through careful planning during the summer of 2000 Maverick determined that the exterior walls could be prefabricated onsite as the steel was being erected. There were a few modifications to the steel in order to carry the wall sections but with some foresight they were incorporated into the design with no problem and minimal expense.
Most of my subcontractors thought the idea was crazy but standing firm with my plan we pressed forward. Even they were amazed that we could totally enclose a floor in 3 hours, so much so they used the idea on other projects there after.
The steel was completed on December 28, 2000. The concrete on metal deck was followed immediately and as a floor was cured we moved up to the next floor, followed by framing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, drywall, finish carpentry, paint and floor covering.
THIS PROJECT WAS COMPLETED ON TIME AT APPROX 11:00 AM ON MAY 3rd 2001
1:00 pm NOV. 1, 2000 AND READY TO GO
TRAILERS WERE STAGED AT OUR YARD IN SAINT IGNACE UNTIL THE BOAT COULD TAKE THEM TO THE ISLAND.
THE BOAT IS ONLY 95' LONG SO ONE AT A TIME IS ALL WE CAN DO.
ABOUT 2.5 WEEKS INTO THE JOB
WE HAD TO SET SOME FROM THE FRONT THEN MOVE AND SET SOME FROM THE BACK.
A VIEW FROM THE SERVICE ALLEY APPROX. 3 WEEKS
4 WEEKS THE RISE IN THE CENTER IS AN IRONWORKER WAITING FOR THE NEXT PIECE
A LITTLE FUZZY BUT YOU CAN SEE IT START TO TAKE SHAPE (JUST RIGHT OF THE WHITE BLDG.).
YOU CAN SEE THE YELLOW WALL SECTION IS 1 OF THE PREFABRICATED WALL PIECES.
ITS NOT CHRISTMAS YET BUT IT'S COMING FAST. NOTICE THE TREE (W/LIGHTS ALSO) ATTACHED TO ONE OF THE LAST BEAMS OF THE FRONT SIDE.
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT; 1 CHRISTMAS TREE 2 IRONWORKERS.
HURRY UP BOY'S ITS STARTIN' TO SNOW "LETS GET THIS BACK FINISHED & GET OFF THIS ROCK."
EVEN THE WINDOW OPENINGS HAD PREFABRICATED TEMPORARY WEATHER PROTECTION.
WELDING DOWN THE LAST BIT OF FLOOR DECK BEFORE THE ROOF.
WE SET THE ELKIN MOBILE MIX UNIT UP AGAIN AND UTILIZED THE HEATED PAD JUST AS LAST YEAR.
PUMPING CONCRETE TO THE FLOORS ABOVE ALLOWED FOR EASY PLACEMENT AND SPEEDY DELIVERY.
THE MICRO BATCH PLANT WAS HUSTLING THAT DAY.
THIS IS THE TWIN ELEVATOR SHAFT (1 FOR GUEST & 1 FOR SERVICE). THE DEVICE WRAPPED AROUND THE ELEVATOR IS A HYDRO-MOBILE SELF CLIMBING SCAFFOLD SYSTEM. BY CONSULTING WITH THE MANUFACTURER WE WERE ABLE TO SET THE SYSTEM UP IN REVERSE THUS ALLOWING THE MATERIAL TO BE HOISTED UP THE CENTER OF THE SHAFT. FOR TEMPORARY WEATHER PROTECTION WE HUNG INSULATED BLANKETS DOWN THE SIDES OF THE SYSTEM. THE POLES YOU SEE ARE SIMILAR TO THAT OF A TENT. FIELD FABRICATED AND COVERED WITH A TARP. BY HEATING THE SHAFT FROM THE INSIDE WE COULD KEEP THE BLOCK WARM 24/7 WITH NO DETRIMENT TO THE FINISHED PRODUCT.
THE FINISHED PRODUCT.
